In Vitro Fertilization – what is it?

Infertile couples are faced with the decision to begin In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Treatments every year. Most of these couples are great candidates to actually go through the procedure with the only factor stopping many of these candidates from continuing is the financial issues that IVF brings with it.

Infertile couples are faced with the decision to begin In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Treatments every year. Most of these couples are great candidates to actually go through the procedure with the only factor stopping many of these candidates from continuing is the financial issues that IVF brings with it.

IVF was a surgical procedure first successful in 1978. Now, with advanced sonogram use, the procedure is generally a non-surgical one. However, just like the surgical procedure – pregnancy cannot be guaranteed after the procedure is performed. In a non-surgical IVF, a needle is pushed through the vaginal wall to recover mature eggs from the ovaries. As a woman, this might sound horrible enough but the discomfort has been likened to your annual pap smear or an endomitrial biopsy. After harvest and an analyse by an embryologist, the egg is placed with the father-to-be’s sperm when fertilization chances are at a peak. Once the egg and sperm unite and a pre-embryo begins to develope, the cells are watched closely, being kept in a petri dish with a solution that replicates the environment the baby would normally have in the fallopian tubes. When promising enough as a pregnancy, the ball of dividing cells are placed into the uterus by using a catheter inserted into the vagina and through the cervix. This usually takes place around 2 days after retrieval of the eggs, which is also the time it normally takes a ‘regular conceived baby’ to go from the fallopian tubes into the uterus. The woman is then asked to remain still in bed for approximately one hour and then sent home.

A couple should wait about two full weeks before having a blood test to determine if the pregnancy took. In this time, the couple should avoid sexual intercourse as uteran contractions can damage the placed pre-embryo.

A common question regards multiple births, and yes, they occur as twins 25% of the time with the IVF procedure and 2-3% of the time the couple can look forward to triplets. One of the hardest decisions regarding pre-embryo’s is the possibility of having to face the decision of selective abortion OR the disposal of any pre-embryo’s that were harvested and froze in case you needed them in the future for further IVF treatments.

The procedure itself is not one that seems to be dreadfully painful, however it is painfully expensive. In most cases, IVF is not covered by your insurance carrier, making it an unattainable procedure for many couples. The procedure is made even more expensive if you must repeat the procedure with multiple cycles, and the number of cycles is undetermined before hand.
